'81 50 HP Evirude O/B won't "warm" start

The engine will start and run fine cold. However, if I shut it off and try and re-start, it will turn over but won't catch. If I continue trying, I can smell gas around the engine. I have an OMC O/B throttle. Is there a manual choke that I might have set wrong?

Look on the Carb. for a Red Lever. It should be in line with the front and rear of the Carb.

I have looked and it appears that the choke is controlled by the throttle. There is an electrical piston that operates the choke. I have traced the wire to the harness leading to the throttle. The throttle is an OMC. I have purchased both engine and throttle used and do not have a manual for either. What possibly on the throttle controls the choke?

Pushing IN on the key switch activates the choke(Primer selonoid). If it starts fine cold, does not sound like a choke problem. Can you give more info about your starting procedure and any other problems that are occuring. How long do you run it before it won't restart, Ect?

I have run it for an hour. Shut it off for about 30 minutes. Then I tried to restart. The engine turns over but doesn't "catch". After three or more attempts, I can smell gas coming from the engine. I have not checked for spark.

Is it possible the coil is damaged or getting too hot? Will a car timing light work on the o/b to check for spark?

Yes a car timing light will work. It is an excellent way to check for spark.

Ken

As Rick said, the pushing in of the key activates the fuel enrichment (read choke). Are you pushing in on the key when you try to start it?

If so, you'll flood it.

Also,

The John/Rudes will act this way if you have a faulty needle and seat and/or float in one or both carbs.
