81 70hp evinrude?

i am looking at a 1981 procraft with a 70hp evinrude on the back of it the guy only wants 1000 dollers for the boat so that make me feel like there is something fishy about it other than the livewell. other than a comression check (wich i dont know what the specs should be on that)what should i look for in this motor, i have been burned befor on boat motors so i would like to know in detail what to look for if anyone is out there that could help plez let me know thanks

The compression should be over 100 psi with no more than 10 % DIFFERENCE between clinders.<br /><br />Check the lower lower unit drain plug, you should get ONLY oil when you crack it open.<br /><br />Take a test drive, if it performs right, it's probably OK.

They are GREAT performers for their size and weight. Not bad on fuel either.<br /><br />They should be propped to run at least 5500 rpm (wide open throttle) with a light load. Anything less is lugging the engine. They won't take that.

cool thanks, so when i test drive it i should look fro it to preform up to 5500 rmps what about the boat its a 1982 procraft good boat or no how do u check to make the boat is good

See how the boat handles.<br /><br />Walk around (heavy) on the floor, any soft spots? If so, pass, unless you want a major project.<br /><br />Watch the engine on the transom. Does the transom flex when shifting gears, etc. If so, pass.<br /><br />I am also in AZ, where are you?

when you say flex do u mean you can actually see it go in and out like back and forth? sorry for so meny questions just want to get all the details because i got bured on a astroglass that the motor need minor work and then 1500 dollers later it still didnt run so i am skeered lol thanks agine

Better yet.<br /><br />Raise the engine all the way up, while on the trailer.<br /><br />Grab the skeg, part under prop, and lift. Does the transom move a lot (more than 1/8"?<br /><br />If so, pass.

hey is there a chat room around or can you only post messages? the skeg is that the foot of the motor?
