'81 Evinrude 50HP - Remove starter to drop lower unit ??

The 1981 OMC manual for the 50-55-60 hp outboard motors says that part of the procedure for removing the lower unit is to remove the starter. I've removed the starter before for other reasons but I don't see why this would be needed on this 50 hp motor to drop the lower unit. I just want to replace the impeller. Is removing the starter really necessary to drop the lower unit on this motor, and if so, why ?

Just makes it easier to disconnect the shift rod.
