Hello Everyone,

I have an Evinrude '81 70hp and when I crank the starter motor over, it starts to crank slow for maybe five seconds then picks up speed to a normal speed crank. I have pulled the s.motor apart and didn't find anything untoward, the brushes were "used" but not that bad so I cleaned the commutator and gave it a general clean and put it back together again but of course there was no change. My owners manual for the motor says the battery should have a minimum CCA of 350. The battery is new and and has a CCA of 520.
I also put a new solenoid for good measure but of course no change. Anybody have any ideas or have had the same problem?

cheers
Mike

What you're describing is a typical symptom of a bad ground(s). Solution... go through and clean all your grounds. Good luck!

Howdy Micar.

I suspect that your problem is mechanical, not electrical.

Do a compression check and confirm that there is no water in the cylinders.

Good luck. :)

Sounds like you have an electrical supply problem. Battery cables, starter solenoid or connection problem. With a good Battery and starter you need the current to get to the starter. Try doing voltage drop test, look for that topic on this forum, or try hooking jumper wires from battery to solenoid and ground. ;)

JB
It worries me when you say water in the cylinder, hows a compression test going to find the problem, if anything would'nt a little less compression help to crank over the motor quicker? If I pull the plugs out, of course the motor cranks fast, I immediately thought of electrical problem myself but now I had better take your advise and do a compreesion test. May be there is water leaking past the head gasket?

cheers
mike

i would check all the cables your battery may have plenty of power but you have to git that power to the starter. my first experince with outboards i was seting up a new outbord .the battery got week .ipulled a battery out of a 390 va ford iwas cranking it real good but it wouldnot even turn the 70 hp outboard over. a freshley charged battery did the job .
when you have a week conection you will have the problem you have . aftre you turn it over a few spins if you can without it cranking feel of all the conections the week one will be warm if not hot . a week conection will git warm . papasage
