'81 Johnson 35 Accelerator/Tiller Handle Help

Hey folks, I had previously posted a thread for this issue with an attached video. At this point, I am unable to find the thread after having searched and am starting this new one with an updated video.

After lubricating all moving parts, I am still unable to move anything relating to the accelerator. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can't says for certain, but it looks like you have a linkage missing on the shifter side that releases the timing plate when it is put into forward gear. I have an earlier 40 HP Johnson engine and you can't operate the throttle very far until you put it in forward gear. That keeps you from over riving the engine out of gear. Then and only then will the engine rive up and the timing plate shifts and thereby opens the throttle plate in the carb. So check to see if there is a linkage missing or installed improperly on the shifter side of the engine that the actual shifter operates... Also, purchase the manufacturer's shop manual for your specific engine year and HP motor. The original factory shop manual is simple the bible on your engine. Don't waste your time or money on any after market manual. Then don't cover all the specifics for your engine...

Thanks for the reply. I'll look at it again but I have run through the functions of the throttle assembly several times and I didn't think anything was missing but I'm not the expert. I'll have to look into the shop manual. Thanks again!

what I'd do...pull the spark plugs to release compression....use the manual or electric starter and shift into forward while the motor is turning over.. observe the prop movement to see that it is indeed in forward gear...can you now advance the throttle to wot?...if not, It's going to take some puzzling out. A shop manual is the best starting point and a parts diagram for your motor may assist as well....google for the parts diagrams as several sites offer them

What's the history of this motor? Did it sit outside in the weather, or did you buy it this way? I'm thinking maybe someone did some tinkering before you got it.

I agree with AITn, you'll have to do some troubleshooting. Isolate the tiller and demonstrate full range of motion. If the tiller works as it should, then figure out why that plate won't rotate. In FWD gear, it should rotate and stop at the bumper on the starter. You may have to pull the fly wheel to figure this out. As stated, get a manual and dig in. You have nothing to loose. Keep us posted and good luck.

I can definitely do this. Thanks for the advice! As soon as I can get back out there, I'm all over it with any and all information I can gather in the meantime.

Thanks for the response jasper! Here's the story:

Last month, my wife found an ad for an outboard motor that a guy was wanting to unload. In checking further into it, the guy was having a yard sale. I went to the yard sale and the seller took me to his garage where there were two nearly identical outboards sitting on the floor. He stated that I could have both for a great price as he was moving. Both outboards had allegedly been used in years prior without any issues and been stored in "running condition" about seven years ago. They both came without props and the seller said he would give them to me if found in his garage but I have yet to hear anything back and even shot him an email (he never responded).

From there, I took them home and have only been able to work on them a few times, running into the problems I have. Forgive me if I dont flow in this thread with an acceptable progression as I have a newborn, a 2-year old, work permanent midnights and just moved. If I had my way, I'd dedicate infinite time to these outboards but we all know how life goes.

Sounds like a good project when time is available. And I do understand time is a premium when they're
that age. I have two that grew-up way too fast. One in grad school and the other will be graduating from HS in June.
