I cannot get the shaft off my motor at either end. Tried soaking (for a couple years) with penetrating oil the best I could get in what small space I had. No luck. Others seem to have a problem but only at the powerhead end. If I could get the lower unit to release I might have better luck with better access to the upper end. Seems motors from this era have the same problem (metal problems?). I've opened up motors from the 50's and 60's with no problem .

Just a sidebar but I had a similar year 4 hp that I could not get the upper shaft (piece) out of. Is it something with this era motor as others have had the same problems? The guy I bought it from had tied it to a tree and used his car to pull the shaft. It snapped off near the head. I couldn't get it off either. Sold it; luckily for what I paid ($40) for it.

Many motor suffer this fate.----The way I see it is that motors today will start and run.---Then folks do not service them just because motor runs.-----Never consult a shop to grease the spline / maintain the water pump !

You are right on the money. Motor used little and serviced even less because it was a great runner. However, the manufacturer should have lubricated the top of the shaft. If they had the motors would probably not be in the predicament they are now. Funny how older motors (50's and 60's and even earlier don't seem to have the same problem????? thanks

???----Many older motors suffer from this as well !----They installed an 0-ring at the top to keep water out and grease in.----And later models also used a seal arrangement.-----But the novices and club fisted mechanics often mess up good design. ----I am working on 3 motors like that .---No issues with rusted splines on them.
