81 Mercruiser 260 alpha shift problems

81 Mercruiser 260 alpha drive. When I shift the drive into forward gear there is a high pitched pinging/grinding/squeeling hard to explain sound. The prop doesnt turn. It goes into reverse fine. Just had it serviced, before the service i had to give it alot of throttle before the prop would engage. It would click alot and when revs got up there it engaged. Also when i put the boat in gear with the engine off, the prop spins freely. Cable adjustment or something worse? If its the cable might need some help on propely adjusting. If its anything else...

I just had the problem of having forward but no reverse, i fixed it by adjusting the barrel nut on the lower shift cable that goes to the stern drive. Do a forum search on "no reverse just revs, forward works fine" this might help you out.
