Jason

Lets put it this way, I have not seen very many posts here where people are having problems with the 50 HP Mercs. I personally have not heard anything bad about them. Do a Search at the top of this page using "50 HP MERCURY" and there are many results. Most do not apply to your particular year, but you may be able to get an idea of how the mercs in that range rate.

Re: 82' 50 HP MERCURY?

The 44 cubic inch Merc fours are great motors - they made them from the late 1950s until the mid 1990s. Two weak points. The impeller is relatively light-duty on these. Change it (and use a Merc brand) unless you're positive it was just changed. Secondly, the stator has low & high speed windings for charging the ignition powerpack. In my experience, the low-speed windings tend to burn out on the original stators. Rapair makes a well-designed aftermarket replacement, and I suspect Merc replacement parts have better cooling as well. The other things to look for a pretty generic to outboards; compression should be closely equal cylinder-to-cylinder; 44s like to wind so prop it so it turns 5500-6000 rpm with you alone in the boat; etc.. Good luck!
