82 50HP Merc outboard, Steaming from water hole

I recently purchased a 16 foot boat with this engine. The engine starts, idles and runs well, except... at lower rpms, the "pee hole" or tattle tale stream turns into steam, literally puffing out steam. The few times I have started and then just idled the boat along, I've seen no water, then only steam, until I increase the RPMs greatly, at which time a stream of water appears and will remain until RPMs are decreased to trolling speed. I've read posts, and it seems like an impeller kit may be in order. If so, my greatest concern is correctly removing and reinstalling the lower unit. I'm not an automotive mechanic, but I've successfully worked on a variety of machinery and am willing to give this a try. All suggestions are welcome, including ways to better troubleshoot the problem before digging in... Thanks!

Take it from me. If don't know the condition of your impeller....change it. Its not worth the trouble if you don't. Its fairly easy. If I can do it anyone can!

Check out your local library, mine had a service manual that covered my motor that walked me through it step by step. I can't tell for sure from the diagrams but it looks like its just a few nuts to take off to get to the water pump. I'm not sure though. Just pay attention to what your are removing and take your time, it should be cake.

Other around here know approximately 233,950,300 times as much as me so they might be a little more help!

+1 on change it if in doubt. The first time you do it it will take about an hour. Next time it will take about 15 minutes (at least, that's what my 3.9, 6, and 9.9 hp Mercs take).

The part of this process I'm most concerned about is messing with the shifting linkage... What's your understanding of this part of the process? Thanks.

If I recall you shift the motor into forward, drop the lower unit then never touch the shift linkage. When you put it back in you can spin the prop just a hair to get the drive shaft to slide back in...the shift shaft should slide right back into place.

Got'er done... only few shaky moments.

1. difficulty aligning the splines of the drive shaft on the first go.. ended up poping the cover off the engine with one hand while holding the lower unit in mid install position with the other then turning the engine by hand.... Must be a better way?

2. first attempt at installation was unsuccessful and the seals at the top of the drive shaft came off inside the housing... was able to fish them out and better secure them to the splines of the shaft with lube before further attempts... The waters flowing much better...
Thanks to all :)
