82 Cruisers inc

I just picked up 82 cruisers inc 25' holiday. Engine is a 260hp Mercruiser 5.7 litre. My question lies in the prop, the previous owner said he had the boat up to 40 or so mph, but often needs trim tabs to plane the boat with more than three people on it, on the bay test the boat performed ok, but did not come out of the water the way I would expect, the rear of the prop has the number 14, but I can't discern if that is the inches or the pitch, I would think I need at least a 17" prop (?)..any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Clarification: the diameter is 14" the pitch is probably 17 degrees. Playing with the pitch is what will give you better hole shots. For that engine the WOT should be 4200-4600. There is a thread in the FAQ's on this subject....J

Bob;
I have the 1983 version of that boat. It's the same as yours with different decals. Owned it since new. Great boat
I belive my prop is also 14" diameter and 17 inch pitch. I believe my top speed with that set up was 37 mph, so your in the ball park with 40.

That boat definitely needs trim tabs. I couldn't imagine trimming her without them. The boat is a little too big and heavy to be trimed with the outdrive. I just leave the outdrive down all the way.
I usually cruise at around 2700 rpm's which gives me about 25 mph on plane and use the tabs to level her depending on load.
