I raised the motor slightly to release the support and now the motor won't go down. The hoist motor sounds (over)loaded if I try to raise it further and sounds completely unloaded (higher pitch) when trying to lower the engine.
I wiggle the engine and there is no slop up or down.

Are the small trim rams going down while you are running the trim motor down?

Try this, hit the down trim buttom and give the motor a littel push down by hand.

Let me know if this gets it. If not post back what is happening.

I am not a mechanic but this has happened to me.
Mac

Thanks Mac
I tries with help from a friend to push the motor down while hitting the trim button...no dice. I even added fluid..still nothing. I hear there are some check valves inside that could go bad.

OBJ, While you were posting a response, I was checking the screw plug under the motor. there are only two; facing the unit one on the resevoir (right) and one under the motor (left). I slowly unscrewed the one under the motor expecting it to slowly drop. It didin't. I unscrewed it all the way and removed it. Nothing. What little fluid that leaked out from behind the plug is whitish in color. Water? Air?
Behind the plug appears to be something resembling the valve stem of a tire. The check valve?

What next? Remove the valve?

kj....look on the starboard transom bracket. There will be a hole there. If you look in the hole you will see a "screw head". This is the manual release. Take a screw driver and turn it counter clockwise 2 to 3 turns. The engine should lower. If it goes down, then try the motor again.....don't forget to close the manual realease.

I did not see an o-ring or any spring. I tried to depress it with a screwdriver (because it looks like a valve stem and that works with bicycle tires so...why not)...it didn't seem to budge. I read elsewhere about check valves. Is this the same thing? If not, where are they located?

I'm not sure how I would remove it. It probably requires a special tool.

It thought this was the manual release screw

From the parts break down, that's the pump control piston. Moves back and forth for up and down direction. There is an o-ring in the middle of it and a spring in back of it. Did the spring in front come out? Now, I don't know what's going to happen if you pull that piston out....probably the motor will drop suddenly while coating you with fluid.

Did you find the manual release screw? If the fluid is whitish, it may have water in it.

Re: 82 Evinrude E90tl won't lower

Yep, I found it. The engine lowered slightly when I loosened the manual release and then stopped. I was able to push the engine lower, but with quite a bit of resistance. With the screw tightened back, the engine will raise again but it will not lower. Second time I lowered it manually, it lowered all the way to the trim bars but no further. The trim bars appear unaffected by the manual release. As before, it tilts up again but not back down.

This morning it works. I left it down all night and tried it again this morning. It went up and down, including the trim. I cycled it a few times thinking perhaps it got air bound when low on fluid. As it cycled up and down the motion smoothed out (it way a bit jerky before). To test it out, I raised it to full height and it once again stuck. Back to square 1. What causes this when fully extended that doesn't happen any other time?

The manual release screw is on the starboard side...through a hole in the transom bracket. The piston may be stuck....in the up position.
