I have the same problem in a 351 ford marine engine, but did not how to start a new thread as I am new to the forum. The oil I found came out of the flame arrestor. After reading other threads, I am taking steps to find this problem and correct it. Both water temperature 160 and oil pressure 60 was fine until I went full board and made a quick dash home one day before it got real dark. Slept on the boat and the next day, I took the boat out again for a few hours before heading home. I never really rev up the boat above 3500 for the time I had it (six months), but I replaced the spark plugs the other day and was checking out the performance of the engine which sounded really great. Upon returning I saw my oil pressure gauge was down to 40 so I took the boat in on a slow pace and after docking, checked on the oil. It was low, but didn't know why until I investigate further and found a small pool of brown gravy in the bilge area under the engine. I put down towels to soak it up and can see a small film of oil in the engine compartment. I was wiping it up until I saw the brown gravy on the bottom and started looking for answers. ?(a blown head gasket?) ? Still looking, but narrow down to flame arrestor that show the mist started in that area. Thus far i am still investigating and hope to post a thread when I figure out these buttons on the forum. Meanwhile it seems that we are in the same boat with a oil problem.

With pumping oil out the flame arrestor, this leans me to think broken rings. I would pull the plugs and see what they look like

When I change the plugs it was not Charcoal WhiteLight most people describe it was a little bit dark and light but slight oil film but not really but basically it worked fine in the motor and when I change the spark plug the engine perform much better that I even open full throttle a few times.

Do a compression test and see what you come up with

Compression ok 140 all around, seems like oil coming from top of carburetor , replace gasket to see if it does better, but still losing 1/2 quart of oil after two hour troll at 1200 rpm, 4-5 kts. All oil comes from top of carb. Check valve cover, PVC tube all tight. Friend told me I might have sticky valve open.? Possible? I have to take pictures next time I go out to the boat. Did not have this problem until I change spark plugs and the engine ran great. Now have this oil leak somewhere.Any one ideas??? Thanks for your help meanwhile

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... There ain't no oil in the Carb,...

If yer seein' oil there, it's comin' from the crankcase vent tubes,...
A pressurized crankcase is usually caused by ring blow-by,...

Re: '82 Ford oil leak

is there a pvc valve on that engine? if so could be stuck or gummed up.

Nope, it should have 2 open vents from the valve covers, with tubes to the flame arrester,....

I don't know what all a "PCV" valve consists of, but my starboard side valve cover has a metal fitting with a check-valve in it. May or not be a PCV valve, but it's a check of some sort, and it is definitely factory.

Re: '82 Ford oil leak

well a positive crankcase ventilation (pcv) valve is a pollution control device used in the auto industry to draw crankcase fumes under vacume or (post venturi) into the combustion chamber and burn them instead of venting them to the atmosphere. The marine engine sucks the crancase fumes through the carb via the two vent hoses without the valve (pre venturi). Now if this is an auto engine that was transplanted into the boat by someone who was not a marine mechanic it is possible that the engine was not properly marinized. If this engine somehow is suffering blowby and the pcv valve is plugged then the pressurized oil and crancase fumes would be pushed out the breather that goes to the carb...as a matter of fact that would happen without a pcv valve as well. it is possible to have good compression with bad oil rings.

The breather tubes are a distinct possibility. Also just to rule things out, if you saved any of the old plugs put the old next to a new one and verify they are the same length.
AND take a look through the area where you were working and make sure you haven't disturbed or broken anything that carries oil.

The PCV valves could've been closed . I clean both my oil filter And replaced the PCV valve. Close inspection showed that there was oil around the valve cover gasket. I tighten bolted the valve cover and almost each one was a quarter turn. Took the boat out on a sea trial and the engine ran great and After returning I inspected the engine and saw that it was no oil loss I think I have solved the problem . It was either the valve cover gasket that had to be tightened down Or it was the PCV valve , either way the problem solve ,. I want to thank everyone for their input in this problem .

Cheers tommy x.

Re: '82 Ford oil leak

As stated there are no PCV valves on boats. If your motor has leftover PCVs take them off and put on plain open elbows off the valve covers. It's a minor thing but it could have an effect somewhere down the line. Boats operate in such a wet environment that the more air you can get through the crankcase the less likely you will get that milkshaky looking water emulsion in there.

You wrote that you cleaned your "both filter". Did you clean out the tubes from the valve covers to the carb? Or did you clean something else.
Was oil getting out of the valve cover gaskets before you snugged then down?
Any way, I'm glad you aren't losing oil any more.
