Boat always been a good runner. Started running crappy overnight. Starts with a tap of the key. Idles great. Won't plane. After some troubleshooting I have found that #5 cuts out (inductive light goes out) around 1500RPM. The other cylinders however do not cut out, but seeing how rough it runs WOT on the lake, I would assume its a problem with more then one cylinder. But for troubleshooting purposes, I only rev'ed it just higher then high idle, in this case, just enough for #5 to fail. I then wired it so #6 used #5's coil and vise versa. Problem stayed on #5, so ruled out coil. Then I swapped the two sets of three wires between the boxes, and then #5 did not cut out. (#4 did) This happens consistantly, not intermittant. Question is... could the rectifer be causing this problem? I did not diconnect it, as I am not sure how... But it looks a bit "bloated" and the "resin" is cracked. I would need to take the boat to a shop to do the stator. I don't have the tool to remove the flywheel. So, I would like to be sure it is not the rectifier before I continue. Any thoughts?

-Deep Yooper.

Re: 82 Inline 6 - 90HP - electrical

UPDATE! Thought I would give the rectifier a run... disconnected the two yellow wires... wire casing fell apart showing several areas of bare wire... and to beat hell... #5 fires as normal.. question is... does this mean stator is burned out (charge coils?) Damn.. I guess I will just buy the damn tool to pull the flywheel. Might as well order the stator and rectifier too. Any suggestions on stator manufacturer? otherwise there is a merc shop only 80 miles away with part in stock. (closest merc dealer to me.. ironic part is actual closest merc dealer only 30 miles away... but have to cross bay or drive three hours arround.. hehe.)

I have not used them but have heard that CDI Rapair has better quality and cheaper than OEM.
