Hello All,

I am helping a buddy with his boat and we have it running pretty well until it warms up, for example yesterday we put in and went for about 45 minutes with no problems, slowed down for a no wake zone then stopped at a marina for about 2o minutes, boat ran terrible after that, would start but would not get above 3000 RPM, opening the engine compartment helped some but not much. I am leaning toward ignitions problems related to heat, lowered resistance, ect. Perhaps the ballast resistor, what do you think and how do I check it. The points and cap look good, no sign of wear but there is a black powdered substance inside the cap, did not seem to be under the rotor? Plugs and wires just replaced.

I think you should be looking more toward a fuel related problem. Like a choke too tight. That would flood a 140 very quickly and make it almost impossible to start.
If it's flooded, just opening the throttle to the WOT position should allow the engine to start.
