I just bought an 82 mariner 50hp. The motor was running last year on the 4th of july. (I seen it run) it has been sitting in a garage for a year now on its side. what would be the first thing you would do to get it ready for the water?

Suzuki40

Yep. Then I'd drop the carb bowl to check for varnish/crud and clean the carb if necessary. Pull the plugs, shoot WD40 or the like into cylinders and turn over by hand to distribute. Then whip up a fresh batch of 50:1 and let 'er rip!

Thats what I had in mind...but, knowing me I overlook the obvious most of the time. I have installed new carb kits, new plugs,(havent squirted wd-40 in cylinders),changed lower unit oil,The carbs were gummed up real bad so they were taken apart and soaked for a day or so and everything cleaned very well.
Am I ready to try and fire her up now? is there anythng I forgot? ( there looks to be an air filter missing? Do outboards use them?

Thanks,
Suzuki40

No air filter... Just an airbox. I would pour a little 2stroke oil into each cylinder as said earlier, and spin by hand to distribute. It will smoke at crankup for a few minutes but at least those pistons and rings will not be dry. :D :p
