82 mercruiser change over

Guys,
Is it possible to mount a alpha one outdrive to my boat and also would there be a big effect using an outdrive that came from a 165 4cyl or a 4.3 since mine is a 140hp 4 cyl.

If it's Gen1, it's a direct bolt on.
If it's Gen 2, nope

yes, big difference.
wrong gears inside it.
Your engine doesn't have enough torque for the ratio.
You might be able to reprop to make it work, but if you are drive shopping, just buy the right one

I have a 1982 and I do not see any others markings that say alpha one, the top plate over the upper gears has loop on it!

I did find a local outdrive that is pre alpha from a 3.7 4 cyl motor, does anybody know if that would work?

That loop on the top means you probably have a type I drive. Is it black(Merc)?

I think the 3.7 used a 6cylinder gear ration even though it was a 4 cylinder

Ayuh,... You have a Pre-Alpha,....
You can use either another Pre-Alpha, or an Alpha 1....
But either 1 has to be the 1.98:1 gear ratio....
It is only used with the 2.5l motors,+ the 3.0l motors...
All the others won't work well....

You can buy a Brand new replacement here at iboats for $1300...
