Have an '82 OMC 5.0L 305 motor with 800 outdrive with the rubber boot around it.

I need to change the impeller, already bought the kit, $75.. I got the shop monual for this, and the entire outdrive has to be taken off to acomplish this.

I'm pretty good mechanically, and have help, but after looking at the boat, I'm not sure if this is something I want to tackle..

Has anyone out there done this? How hard is it to take that drive off? (it's NEVER been off from what I can tell)

Local shop wants 2.5 hours of labor @$75 to fix.
Right now, I'm thinking that is money well spent unless this is easier than I expect.

Re: '82 OMC 800 Out drive Impeller change

ndemge
I have a 1980 model 140 HP OMC stringer and do all my own work but I was afraid to take off also. I just do not understand that shifter adjustment. I have had pump changed twice when having upper gearcase resealed. First guy tried to fix upper gearcase leak 4 times but still leaked same amount. Took 4 long trips then could sea color change. Last year water pump drive shaft failed so no water pump or prop shaft turning. Had upper gear case resealed, water pump drive shafts replaced and water pump Bill $1000 but they fixed everything. The water pump drive shaft failure a common failure so you might want to ask how much to check or replace as in same area as water pump. Also all the dealers I talked to said if I supplied the parts then no parts warranty or labor warranty if a part problem.

I love to find a place who would let me watch or help remove and repalce as the rest of the work normal and looks pretty easy.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply.

I bought the parts from the guy that will be doing the work. So no problem with the warranty.

I asked him if I could watch as the guy did it, promised not to be underfoot, just WATCH... he declined.

The boat is an '82 and only has about 100 hours on it. It just sat for years. Going to have him give it a tune up and general check on things while it's in there.

Ask for your old parts back. I done this each time I have had my impeller replaced. People on this board will tell you to replace impeller every two years but I have two motor the 1980 OMC that has had impeller replaced twice in 23 years and can find no sign of wear and fins straight on both. On my 1975 outboard 28 years old I replaced back in the 80 and was going to replace last year when changed from a 15 inch shaft to a 20 inch shaft but when I took it out could see no sign of wear no cracks and fins almost straight so I put it back in. I am begining to belive the every two years is just to generate money for the dealers. I never turn motors over with out water but would like to know how your looks also.
