Just picked up my boat an motor from the Marine dealer. Would not run over 2000 rpm under load. Stator was replaced, plugs, both switch boxes and I had them replace the water pump impeller. Compresion was 100 lbs on each cylinder. Total bill was 865.00. Sould I keep this motor or is it time to update due to it's age? This is the first repair the motor has had other than plugs in the past 14 years.

Keep it!! There are motors a lot older than that still running good. I have a 83 150 that still runs good.

83, thats barely broken in. Mines a 69 and very strong. Don't buy into the hype that you need the newest thing since sliced bread. You would never recoup the money spent on a new outboard in fuel savings or any of it in your lifetime. Get that inline running good, keeping it is vastly less expensive than a new motor.

My concern is repair expense. The dealer said they were trying to get them retired as it was costly to repair them. While this year is the first time I have ever had a problem, laying out that much money on a 23 year old motor made me question if I should be looking for a newer model

Of course they will tell you that. They want to sell you a new one.

Re: 83 115 HP Merc Should I Keep It?

I've carved out an entire niche market catering to the "direct charge" inline that Brunswick and the dealer system seem so eager to get rid of.

The fact is that many aftermarket sources for parts for these things have sprung up. It's only costly to repair them because Brunswick Mercury is trying to make it that way. It's time you avoid "the dealer" and look for a smaller independant shop that gets the parts from Sierra, Pro-Marine, NAPA, Rapair, etc etc.

And back to those compression numbers, sounds like the rings are getting sticky, use Mercury Power Tune as directed (a couple times) to make sure they unstick.

As the motor ages you may need to "get involved" a little deeper in the repair process - to avoid getting hosed.

For example, on your last repair,I'd guess that the high speed winding on the stator failed. Replacing both switchboxes was overkill. It's impossible that they'd failed considering it would run OK under 2000 - period. And the waterpump is normal PM regardless of age of any outboard.

So take your last bill, deduct the parts and labor to do the switchboxes, deduct the water-pump as normal maintanance. And imagine the stator part cost only 1/2 that on the aftermarket.

That's what the *failure* could have / should have cost you, if your shop was on the ball and there wasn't an "agenda" to retire the inlines.

-W (PS - I hope you got to keep your old switchboxes - you are entitled to by law - and you can use them if you *do* get a switchbox failure.)

Re: 83 115 HP Merc Should I Keep It?

All old parts were returned to me. There are no independent shops in this area for some reason. 2 dealers told me they no longer worked on the old motors so my choice of repair centers is limited. While I have the factory service manual for my motor, I was intimidated when I pulled off the cover. Too much stuff there for this novice to tackle. However, I will give it a go the next time something fails.

I'm in Kentucky also (Berea) and would be interested in sharing information about various repair places, parts sources, etc. There seem to be a lot more places south of here around the lakes. I had a fairly decent experience getting my 1962 110 worked on (lower unit) in Richmond at Kaylors, but I had to hunt the parts (found a parts motor in Wilmore and told them about Grubbs for seals) but it took forever for them to get to it. One of my fishing buddies has had pretty good luck with a place in Corbin working on his 1956 Evinrude. Overall, my experience with repair costs has convinced me to do as much as I can myself, with manuals in hand and lots of help from this board and John's Old Mercs board also.
