I am a fairly new boat owner and have a 1983 Sea Ray with a 5.0 liter v8 and OMC stinger outdrive. My engine runs pretty well at first, but after a few minutes stalls out of the hole pulling. I have changed the coil, rebubilt the carb (quadrajet 4b), changed the plugs points, rotor etc. Any help in diagnosing the problem will be greatly appreciated. I am at the end of the rope hanging.

My 5.0 cobra did the same thing once and I reset then adjusted the idle mixture and idle speed screws on the side of the bowl. I hooked up a mac tach and set to the highest possible tach (or you can set to highest manifold pressure) that the engine can reach---then adjust your main idle speed screw for the final idle speed.

this took care of the issue for me---After ruling out the accel pump action and clearance i found the carb was starving for fuel when I went to goose it to get out of the hole. Thus the stall and sometimes hesitation. i havent had an issue once since then. Might be good to look over all fuel system components leading up to the carb. Any in line fliters? Fuel tank vent not blocked? Water separating fuel filter new and clean? Carb inlet screen clean?

Check this out-- http://www.holleytv.com/featured_landing.php?reset=true

not sure if you have a holley but this helped me and gives you the basic idea. sorry if this is old news.

Sounds like your distributor advance may be malfunctioning. Perhaps

You should double check all the parts you put on to see if they are set up right and have not changed. Ignition timing issue can cause issues as you describe.

You changed a bunch of parts and did a tune up. Did the engine have this same symptom prior to your performance of maintenance?

Keep your chin up and keep looking for the problem. Good luck to you.

Thanks guys for the info. I think the problem is the gas tank vent. you can blow into the vent with the cap on and it holds presure, but when I loosen the gas cap (metal cap) is seems unrestricted.

So, the vent tube does not appear to be restricted, but the cap does not seem to be venting or vice versa.
