I have an '83 Evinrude 60 hp motor that runs like a dream when started BUT it struggles to start. It is obvious ly a fuel problem but i cannot get to the bottom of it. I pump the ball hard and use the electric choke and sometimes it starts and sometimes not. I troll on one motor and when I switch motors it is a mission to get it started. I have to take the cover off and prime it with the little red lever on the side - then she fires! Help please.

Well lady jayn.
If it is easy to start, when you prime it manual at the little red lever ( SOLENOID VALVE ), Im sure your problem is electric at or to your solenoid valve.
Turn the starting-key in pos. "ON". Then push in the key (electric choke)and hear what happens at the solenoid valve. You should be able to hear the valve is opening. If not, then control the voltage between (purple/white and ground) at your solenoid valve. (the starting key must be hold in electric choke position. If no voltage reading, you have a wirer or start-contactor problem. If voltage reading, your problem is your solenoid valve.

Thanks Duke3 - interesting you should say that because I have been blowing the main fuse on the motor when using the choke and a previous reply I had pointed to the electric choke solenoid - I will test it as you suggested.
