Did you disconnect the shift rod that leads from the powerhead to the lower unit?

You have to remove both the 4 bolts that is above the propeller area, visible form underneath, and the nut in front of the mid-section, just above the lower unit. Remove the two plastic screens, that covers the water-intake, and seperate the shiftrod connection, Joe mentions. There is a small plastic ring that has to be carefully removed after the retainer nut is all the way op. Now and then the casting is corroded, where the stud in lower unit passes thru the mid-section, that is where the nut in front is. This can be solved by turning nut on, and putting a piece of metal or whatever fits above the nut. When you turn the nut counterclockwise again, it will press the stud thru the casting and loosen it up. ( hope I express myself clear enough ) be carefull punching on the finns, they can/will break. Rarely, the driveshaft splines can be rusted in the crankshaft, but is is rare on that model.

If it has ever seen salt water, the front stud just mentioned can be a real challenge, probably requiring heat and force.
