unless i am mistaken that is your overheat/temp alarm.... it indicates your engine is overheating. ummmm
when did you last replace impeller, and or thermostat?
only 2 other reasons i can think of that this would happen otherwise, one is corrosion filling in water passages in block or debris collecting in water lines and passages. and the other is faulty temp horn (sensor/pyrometer heck i dont know proper name for it)

questions for you, is there water coming out of the indicator to show you that the water pump is working, and two i gotta ask, did you have water supplied to engine when checking it? if not it only takes a few seconds if that to damage the impeller for the water pump..... I have to ask as I see no mention of "I put the muffs on the engine, or put the drive in a 50gal drum....."

Others here are far more knowledgeable than i am, but i didnt want to leave you waiting for some answer somewhere, if they contradict what i say, then i would follow their suggestions rather than mine.

thanks, oner, for the only reply to this post. had engine in 50 gal drum,1/3 full of water, just above flat fin (my termonogly, sorry) about 2 -3 inches above prop. ran 2-4 minutes then alarm, shut done right away,re-start and more alarm,I stopped there, started this search, went back out today, added 6-8 inches of water started aok no alarm ,decent idle, good stream of pee, white misty exhaust, looking normal, but ran only 3-4 minutes should I have let it run longer, did I create a problem? when should a water pump and or impeller be changed? this is the first and only time this type of thing happened engine had been run last time out was about 10 weeks, was running well then, now getting ready to store for winter and this alarm, problem or no? I'm going out now to run it longer (10-15) minutes, should alarm by then if there is problem correct? I'll let you know, thanks again red skies at night!

You didn't have the foot deep enough in the water, maybe after test with no alarm you didn't do any significant damage to the impellor but you might want to check it out. To be safe the water level should be at least halfway above cavitation plate and the exhaust relief outlets.
