I have the engine and drive out and all over the garage. Found some issues with the bolts falling out of the exhaust pipe at the transom that let water run right in the transom wood for who knows how long, and a poorly installed live well pump and drain that also let in the water. Transom wood is shot in the lower half center of the transom. And the hoses for the trim tilt are burned through. Also cooked the trim sensor/position wires. I have fixed the heat exchanger tubes that were leaking, rebuilt the carb and new seals and speedy sleeves on the cam shaft in water pump. Now to find something to put in to replace the transom wood.
As you can see, someone thought it was a good idea to try and sylicone the transom plate. That really didnt help as that was now the cause of the leak.

Sounds like a big job and you seem ready for a challenge. Good luck with the 470, there are a few on the site that are running them and nobody says they aren't powerful when running good.:D

I'm sure you've read some of the horror stories.

Got some photos of the interior/exterior?

Is it basically a huge SS?

Re: 84 21' 470 Overhaul begins. (with pics)

I've read all the hype, good and bad. Mine runs real good, better with the carb redone. I took the valve cover and pan off, not a spec of grim in it.
All and all its been taken care of in general. Just the normal wear on the cam where the seals were. Speedy sleeves fixed that.
Im sure the heat exchanger was damaged while sitting for 2 years. But i think i got that solved. If not i have a spare.

Anyway ill throw up some more pics as i go. At least i dont have to take off the cap or do the floor. :D

Well the 470's are trouble, that's a documented fact. However, if the recommended upgrades are made and you don't overheat 'em they have great power and fuel economy. Should be a good motor for a light SC. I'd love to see some more pics of your boat.

Short update.
Got all the bad wood out finally. That was a job.
Got the balancer back on, had to buy a new installer as the my one seems to have a new owner somewhere.
Still need a new raw water pump. Then on to the transom work next week. Im going to take awhile on this as the money is running a little short. But i figure about 4 to 5 more weeks to the finish. We will see if I can stay on the schedule.

Working on some pics. I left the camera in the boat (forgot it) and it got wet from the rain. Not sure if its gonna live or not.
Also trying to get my phone cam and my puter to talk nice, iphone and PC dont seem to mix for pics. Ill put up some next time i post.

Re: 84 21' 470 Overhaul begins. (with pics)

Well I have been busy. I have the transom done and ready for the drive to go back in. After getting out as much of the bad wood as i could, I bought some "Get-rot" for what i could not get out. Drilled the holes (not really needed) like the directions said on out it in. It is a very good way to make solid out of junk. I let it set up and started cutting the new wood to install. Since I could not it in as one large piece I made a few small pieces and cut them so they would interlock with the others and not cross any joints from the front or rear piece. That took some thinking and more wood then it would have if I could have done it as a single piece 2 layers thick. Some of it was having to remake a piece or two as they didnt fit exactly right. But oh well. As i put them in I used the resin to bond them together and the screwed it together. She is stronger then the original now. After that had set for the night I built up the fiberglass with alternating layers of roven and stranded mats until i was in the specs for the thickness. Let her sit over night. I cut the hole and drilled the bolt holes today. Did a test fit and all seems good to go. Next is getting the new gaskets and hoses to put it back in. Need a payday (or two) for that, but i have time.
Maybe the next pics will be installing the parts.:D

That prop looks pretty good, both of mine could use a little sharpening up too.

Hope to hear that beast fired up this summer, good luck with the new parts:)

Well, I've run into a snag.
My hinge pins are striped out. I have a hinge pin tool and with little effort it just clicks around inside the hole. Today's project is to get them out without distroying the bell housing or gimble ring.

Well the pins are out. See my post titled hinge pins striped out. The bellows are removed. All is cleaned. Now I have get the trim position and limit sensors before I can proceed as they are the next to go in. Also still need to the trim hoses before I can really get to putting it back together. But then it's rockin time.

Quick update:
Got home from work yesterday and decided to install the new trim sensor and limit switch.
Wouldnt you know it, they are for a TRS drive. Mine is an Alpha one. They dont fit.
Guess its back to the dealer on tuesday for the right ones.

I have been running twin 190s for about 8 months now, and I rely love these motors. The gas consumption is unreal.. I fished the whole black drum season on one tank of gas... I'm getting around 4mi to the gallon in a 26' boat depending on the sea! I know it sounds crazy, but its for real. I will definitely rebuild my 190s when they need it.. I am saving your notes.

Re: 84 21' 470 Overhaul begins (almost done). (with pics)

Close to the final posts for the project.

I got another set of trim sensors (for an alpha this time) and they went like butter.

Got the new trim lines installed, I went with stainless steel lines and short flex lines at each end. The factory hoses are just to much money for what they are.
The exhaust is installed, new gaskets and shudder, also got new lock washers for the exhasut to transom joint. Dont want those babies falling out.

Installed the motor one tuesday morning, in by 9am, then got out the trusty alignment bar and went to town. 2pm and still didnt have it done, Took a break and waited for some help to arrive. Again and again we treid to get it right but it always seamed that the rear of the engine was to low. Long story short we added one washer to the top of the spring washer under each rear mount and all was well. 2 turns up from the original position on the front mount, a couple whacks with a mallet on the bar and she was butter after that. I cant really figure out why i needed the washers, but what ever.

I next installed the drive and she fit in just great.

All that is left is oil in the drive, gas lines and adjust the shift cables and we are ready fire it up. Also have to plug the old holes in the transom (just the outside fiberglass and gel coat) where the live well pump and drains were. Porbably get that done on tuesday of this week and then off to the dock to see if she still floats and has no leaks. If that goes well then Thursday is test-n-tune day.

If she runs as good as she looks, we may accually survive.....:D

Re: 84 21' 470 Overhaul almost done. New pics added.

Well it done.....
I took it down to the river and backed down the ramp and let her run for about an hour. It sat at 140 deg the whole time and never missed a beat.

Next day I took it to the lake and off i went, ran like a champ through the no wake zone. Got out to open water and eased the throttle forward, bow up and rockin. Up on plane and started to throttle back and she chugged and died....
After the initial confusion passed, i pumped the gas once and cranked it over. It fired right up and idled fine. Not sure what to think so i turned around and headed for shore. Close to shore i turned parallel with the shore and hit the gas again. Same thing only this time i didnt make it but just to plane.
Again i pumped it and it started right up. Ran it back at 1/4 throttle and then at no wake. ran just fine.

Im thinking i may need a fuel pump. Im sure (almost) that it is running out of gas when im in it passed 1/2 throttle.
I can check the fuel pressure but have no way to check the volume. So im hopping the pressure is low.
If its not, i may be in for diagnosis and thinking.

Re: 84 21' 470 Overhaul almost done. New pics added.

could be the float drop off level in the carb or a dirty inlet fuel filter as well, I use my 470 powered islander 221V in the salt in northern BC and couldnt be happier with both the boat and the engine. Twice the fuel mileage of my fishin buddy's 22 foot welded alum with a 225 4 stroke yammy. When youre running an hour and a quarter each way the fuel savings start to add up in a hurry.
I'm currently putting in an oil cooler ( 9.5x13 electric fan with thermoswitch) and an electric fuel pump with filter/water separator as well.
