Finally getting around to fixing the old thing. Last time I ran it, it was hard to start and would only run WOT or close to it, no matter how the mixtures were set. Got a carb kit as well as points and condenser.

The carb still had a black gasket on the fuel bowl, a black tipped needle valve, and a cork float. The new kit came with all the parts you'd want, including a new plastic float. Question: the packing washers are a fiber material (3) and nylon (1). What's the recommended tightness for the jam nut?

On to ignition. Points well worn, felt pad dry as dry and not touching the cam. Rub block worn, points closer than 0.020". Lube for the cam?

Seems the culprit was simple though. When I pulled off the coil, the spark cable was not seated inside. I guess it would make enough spark at high RPMs, but die at lower. It took me calling about 10 places before I found 7mm solid spark plug wire. Should be running better once this is done.

New points usually come with a tiny tube of grease. Otherwise a decent auto parts store will sell you a lifetime supply for not much.

Yeah, found the little tube of grease. It's been a loooooong time since I messed with points. My car has COP and DI...

While you're wrenching on it, I seem to recall on mine that the fuel shutoff petcock has a small screen that can get clogged (?)... I think (?) I had to clean that out once as crud was restricting fuel flow. Or maybe it was just the valve itself that got clogged (?)... was a few years back. Buy a new shear pin or two and stick them into a rubber cork (or piece of rubber?) and zip tie it somewhere out of the way so you have one on hand if you ever need one. When you run it, back the vent on the fuel cap all the way out (so it is open but the vent screw is not loose). If I run mine with the vent only opened a couple turns and loose, vibrations cause it to work it's way back closed and eventually leads to a vacuum in the tank tank and loss of fuel flow... Oh, and I changed the impeller on mine and it pumped noticeably more water after... Obviously since the engine is air cooled, it doesn't affect that, but it did seem to make it a bit quieter as there was more water coming out with the exhaust. These are wonderfully simple and light little engines... most will probably buzz along for decades longer.

Got it running - started on the second pull.

Low speed mixture was perfect at 1.5 turns out. High speed set at 1 turn but fine tuning of that will have to wait until I have more than a bucket to run in. Now it'll idle down nice and low too.

Not the smoothest runner (never was), but it beats idling the 140 when we're fishing.

Glad you got her going again. I'm sure you know this, but that little motor is water cooled so keep it from an over heat! You got a good little runner there. Kinda makes me want one back in my collection.

Yes. New impeller a year ago. IR thermometer says the exhaust plate was 120F after a long period idling.

Had to put a used gearcase on it shortly after buying a couple years back. When I picked it up for C$90 I found the original gear case was full of water and the gears were rusty. There was a torn seal under the impeller. Used gear case was U$20 plus shipping to the GWN from a guy in Florida (found through the want ads on AOMCI) - put new seals in too. GC oil is nice and clean - I use a 20cc animal syringe and a stub of speedo tubing to fill it while the motor is lying on its side.

It's a great lightweight backup motor. Moves the boat far better than two people paddling should the main engine stop running. I used to have an '82 7.5hp but it was massive overkill for trolling, and heavy on the bracket.
