My 1984 90hp Johnson has been nothing but trouble almost since day 4 of owning the @$#%#$& thing! It doesn't really want to start at all. Let me tell you what I have replaced:
1. 4 plugs
2. 1 ignition coil
3. 1 power pack
4. wires
5. stator
6. timer base
7. fuel filter
8. starter
9. vro rebuild kit
10. fuel bulb
11. separator filter
12. boyesen reeds
13. cleaned out both carbs
And out of all of this crap, nothing has fixed my intitial problem. I started out with weak to no spark on two of the cylinders, each on different banks. And after all this I still have the same problem. The ony things I didn't replace were the flywheel, the voltage regulator, one of the power packs and the 3 remaining coils(all ohm'd out as per chiltens manual). I thought for sure the timer base was going to fix my problem but all it did was make my wallet lighter. My compression on all four cylinders is between 105 and 115, that should start right? What else could be wrong? I don't know where to go from here and I'm tired of throwing parts at this damn thing.

Thanks,
mike

If you have at least one plug wire that will jump a 7/16 gap.

Then take that coil and move it to a cylinder that has no fire.

Come back and tell us what the results were. Once you have all the cylinders jumpimg a 7/16 gap, then you can move on to the fuel system.

But fire first. Its a process of elemination. When it left the factory it worked, And you can make it do it again, good as new.

Good luck!

i switched the coils on the left bank and still the same thing, no spark. I was able to flip the connector over and put it back in, that's should have worked right?
I haven't done the lower cylinder on the left side yet. I only tested the right side. I'll have to wait until tommorow.
