I recently bought an '84 Wellcraft Fisherman C/C boat with an Evinrude 150 on it. Boat ran good the 1st 3 times that I took it out. On my last trip out (when it actually cranked), I noticed it running rough idling into the harbor, and it finally died when I reached the dock. Next time out, it would only crank if I gave it full choke, & had throttle nearly wide open, but died when I pulled off of the throttle. I tried changing out the plugs, but that didn't work. I thought it wasn't getting gas, but seemed to be getting plenty. Any common problems with this year/type of motor? I am new to the outboard scene, and would appreciate any advice.

Howdy Mr. Campbell and welcome to iboats. The fact that you had to use the choke and full throttle makes me think your problem is fuel related. Get yo'self a spray bottle and put some premix fuel in it. While cranking the engine, give the carbs a couple of shots of fuel and see if it starts or even tries to start. If it does, which I think it will, check fuel pumps and maybe do a carb overhaul. If that doesn't work, get back to us on this same post so's we can keep up with whats been done already.

G'luck & c/6
Hooty

Thank you for your help. I'll give this a try this weekend and let you know how it goes. The only reason that it may not be fuel related is that the plugs were wet when I took them out.

NAPA will have or can get the carb kits. As far as sparkplug wires, any will work just so they're solid core wires, not carbon fiber.

c/6
Hooty

Hi

You can save a lot of Q&A if you get a new portable tank with new fuel line, fill it with fresh premix and see if anything changes.
That will get you up to the fuel pump.

Next:

If the fuel pump is the problem, you can check by raising the tank to the level of the powerhead, and having someone keep steady pressure on the bulb while you stay at the control.

Next

You need a fully charged, powerful battery to properly start your motor. The cables need to be in good condition and tight. Loose or corroded cables and/or a bad battery can cause permanent damage to electrical components.

Hope this helps.
