Please HELP!!!

My local mechanic has exhasted his efforts on my motor (he has admitted to hating 235's).

I run my 235 on a 17' tri-hull skiboat, using a 23-pitch prop. I know that seems like a steep prop, but this boat used to pull teams of skiers with that prop!

My problem is this: the boat idles rough. When i attempt to pull up a skier, the motor boggs down and dies. After it dies, its hard to even get it running good enough to get on plane. It doesn't have enough power to drive on the trailer, we have to float it.

If i run it at fast idle long enough it will clear up enought to get upto planing speed. Once the motor hits midrange power and the boat has planed it'll run at max RPM with no problems. It just has no power on takeoff.

I can't decide if its flooding or starving. I'm investigating both and looking for advice.

Thanks
Keith

Re: '84 Evinrude 235 hesitates off idle

Update: the VRO has been disabled. We pre-mix it 50:1 The boat mechanic did not plug the oil input line of the VRO, he told me not to. I have read other posts where people disabled VRO and plugged it. What are the Pro and Cons of plugging the oil intake of the VRO?

I have also tried 87 and 91 octane gas. It was slightly more responsive to 91, but that tank might be venting better. I'm about to check the vents on both tanks.

Thanks
Keith

I'm no expert on the subject, but it would seem to me that if you didn't plug the oil side of the pump, it would just pump air and mix this with the gas instead of oil. I would think that "frothy" air filled gas wouldn't work so well, espicially on takeoff.

My 2 cents.

Good luck.
