Hello,

I have an '84 evinrude 35 E35ELCRR and I have a couple of questions.
I am going over the carb again cause the engine is running a little rough. It has just been rebuilt, it appears there is way to much juice going into the engine. My manual says the float level should be from 1 1/8" to 1 5/8" from the bottom of the carb to the bottom of the float (holding the carb the right way up). This is a pretty big tolerance.. What is peoples experiences with the float level setting? What measurement seems to work best?
Also this model has the automatic choke. There is a red lever on the solenoid, what does this do and where should it sit during normal operation? There is no reference to this in my manual apart from showing how to disassemble and assemble it.

cheers
mike

Hi Mike

I have the same motor. Red lever isfor manual choke. Lever should be rightangle to flow direction. If lever pionts same direktion af body of solenoid, fuel will flow by itself.

Did you remember to refit the little gasket around mainjet - or it will get too much fuel.

When you hold carb bottomsup, the float should pe parallel with carb body.

Hi mike,

Ditto G Dane. What you discribed to us was float drop. Make sure, as G Dane said, that the float is level when inverted. This cuts off the full flow from the bowl without flooding the engine. Are you having having problems with fuel running out the carbs or spitting out when engine is running? Are you working from a generic service manual or OEM manual? :D

OBJ,
I'm having problems with fuel, it appears going to only one cylinder, the other is almost spitting it out, and some dropping out the exhaust. I am using a generic manual......

cheers
mike

Re: 84 evinrude 35hp fuel question

Micar

Check if the cylinder not running, is the one that drives the fuel pump. Get a good dry cotton cloth and pull the plugwires one at a time while running. Watch the flywheel with the cloth !!!

The one that do not affect running is the bad one. Does it have spark ?? If not its probably the coil. Try to switch coils and see if problem follows.

If both have spark and the not running drives fuel pump, get a fuel pump kit, if diaphrame has a small hole or crack, this cylinder will suck fuel when vacuum drives pump, and flood.

Other failures could bee: low compression at the not working cylinder ( hope not ), bad reed leaf, bad power pack, bad spark plug. Do a little testing and post results.

Re: 84 evinrude 35hp fuel question

Hi micar...

Couple other things to look for...take the screws that hold the fuel pump to the block out and lift the pump from the block. Don't remove the hoses. Put the screws back in and put nuts on the other side. Pump up the primer bulb and look for fuel coming from the hole in the back side of the pump. If fuel comes from the hole, rebuild the pump. When the engine is running, take a piece of tissue and hold it over the carb that is spitting out. If the tissue blows out, chances are you may have a bad reed.
