I Have a 1984 VRO 150 Hp Johnson model LCRD, motor had sat for a few years and dies out everytime i try forward or reverse, I though it was the shift interruptor switch?? But in my manual it doesnt say that my year does or doesnt have the switch.it only talks about it from like 86 on,, ..anyone know it the 84 does?? Anyway i have no idea what the switch looks like if i did have it ? And if it indeed doesn't could anyone help out to what would be going on here

I just tried to do a spark test and it started pouring out ,, anyway the top cylindars on both sides had spark ,,didnt get to finish

Re: 84 Johnson 150 stalls when put in gear????

Clean carbs are a must for an engine to run, esp the idle circuits which are small and can accumlate dried fuel in the passages. If any fuel was left in the carbs when last shutoff years ago, it has long since dried up and can cause internal carb fuel flow problems. Have you disassembled and overhauled the carbs with an aerosol cleaner since you got the engine? It should idle at 650-700 when in gear, at rest in the water. Proper idling rpm depends more on idle timing than a carb adjustment. If the idle rpm is too low, you will have problems with it dying when going into any gear. There is no shift interruptor, but there is a neutral safety start switch. If you are going to maintain this engine yourself, you need a copy of an original factory service manual.

Check.
Compression
Spark
Fuel delivery
Plug condition
Service carb's
Link and sync
Adjust idle if necessary
Service water pump (been sitting a few years yes ??)
Get a service manual.
