'84 Johnson 30HP not peeing??

I have an 84 Johnson 30hp and can not get it to pee while submerged in trash can of water, ran engine about 2 or 3 minutes, getting very light mist.

I have replaced the water pump (made sure key was correct, and turned shaft clockwise while installing), I checked the water pick up tube by running water through it (no clogs), and I blew 80psi of compressed air into the water pick up tube when connected in top (very very low air pressure was felt coming out of the 2 little exhaust ports).

Could the water jacket be clogged? How would I check this?
Could the thermostat cause this?:confused:

Why not check the thermostat first?

Did you replace the entire pump or just the impeller? If just the impeller, what was the condition of the pump body, the wear plate? Any scoring, etc.

I replaced the impellar only, the plate had a few swirl marks and it was silver instead of painted black like the rest of the plate.
I just now found some dirt from dirt dobber in the telltale hole, I cleaned it all out, and took of the tube off completly and blew air through. I then blew air into the water pick up tube and a good air flow come through tell tale.
I put lower unit back on, put water back into trash can, fired it up and nothing!!:confused::confused:

It felt like a little exhaust was coming out of telltale, but no water?

If the thermostat is not working properly wouldn't water still pee?

how long did you wait for it to pee?and are you sure you have enough water over the water intake?

I waited about 2 minutes, the motor began to get pretty warm to the touch so I shut it off.
(I had water level a little past the rib just above the inlet opening, where the shift rod connects)
One thing I did notice when putting lower unit back on is that on the motor side of the copper pick up tube there was no grommet, or washer (I just pushed it up into the hole, it stayed in place). Is there supposed to be some type of seal on that end?

Sounds like you need more water. The entire water pump assembly MUST be submerged for it to prime and pump.

I have muffs, but thought the trash can with water would work better?

There IS a grommet BRP #0302497. The complete kit has one. Pick one up from a dealer and try again. The pump will not do well w/o it. [See BRP website under parts for the complete parts list for your motor.]

Also, make sure the water is deep enough in the can. Must be well above the cav plate, so prop doesn't blow water away from pump pickup area.

I just compltley submerged the lower unit and same thing, no water.
I ran the rpm's up a little and let it run for about 2 minutes and only exhaust came out of the pee hole??

Ok, Thank you, I thought there should be a gromment there also, but I do not have a manual or repair guide.

I will be stopping at the marina tomorrow!!

I bet it will be much easier to line up the pick up tube into the water pump with that grommet :) I had to hold it up with a coat hanger to line up in the pump housing while I slid the lower unit on!!

I am beginning to believe it has to be something with the water pump. Because I can blow air into the copper pick up tube and get a good flow of air out the pee hole. Is there anything else that could stop the flow?
I will probably pick up a water pump kit that has everything including all seals, gaskets, cup, bushings, etc.
I have just started working on this motor and have no idea if someone before took apart the water pump and put back together with spare parts left over!!

Would a bad thermostat cause this?
Is there still a possibilty the water jacket or somewhere internal to the motor is clogged?
