84 Johnson 50hp cuts out

Bought a Johnson 84 50HP 2 stroke, which was completely rebuilt 2 years ago. Engine was running fine until this year, top cylinder keeps cutting out after 15mins. run time. Engine starts up fine with both cylinders, runs fine for anywhere between 15-30mins ... then we lose the top cylinder.

We take out the spark plugs ... dry them off (top one is wetter than bottom), let it sit for a while, reinstall ... and works fine again.

We have replaced the spark plugs already ... as well as the fuel tank (we thought it was a bad fuel valve which might have been providing a poor air fuel mix) ... also cleaned out the top carb and adjusted flow. Still was occuring.

Next we checked for spark ... and after charging battery completely had positive spark on both cylinders. After which we tested compression. We have 50 on the top and 75 on the bottom. Although it sounds like we might have a stuck ring, would this cause this kind of problems (we don't see any smoke, and engine starts up fine).
We have just added some crankcase cleaner to see if we can unstick the rings.

However, would appreciate any other suggestions.

You may have already done this, but how about a compression test AFTER you've run/heated the engine until the cylinder drops? Will tell you quickly if you've a heat related cylinder problem.

you most likely have a bad coil when you moter warms up and the coil gets hot it will brake down and when it cools again in will workyou can test it by changeing the two cooils and try it and ifit goes to the bottom cylinder then you will now it is the coil it is defenetly electronic ignition problems if it was comprtion it would not idle well and now power

Hey xberet & torxdrive. Thanx for the suggestions. But to answer ... haven't done the compression after the engine gets heated ... just got access to a compression tester. But that is definitely worth pursuing.

As for the recommendation of the coils ... we thought that as well ... however ... since the compression test was showing 50 PSI, didn't think that sinking anymore money in at this point would be worth it.

As an update to the original post - upon trying to see if the crankcase cleaner would help loosen the rings ... all the cleaner flowed out through the carb and pooled up in the lower cowling (had the engine tilted) ... and upon testing the compression again ... the top is still registering at 45/50.

So ... the question comes down to ... is it still worth replacing the coils? Or is a complete tear down in order?
