84 Johnson 60hp won't throttle up

The motor starts easy enough, but it just won't throttle up all the way like it used to. If you punch it it will get to about 3000 rpm and act bogged down. If you keep bumping it it will eventually get up to 3,400 rpm and on a plane at about 20mph, but it if you go too far it will bog back down. When I spray carb cleaner in the bottom piston it will take of like a banshee and do the 4000 rpm and 35 mph like it used to do, but carb cleaner is a little expensive to keep that up. I'm wondering if its the high speed jet but i have taken it apart, and thought i cleaned it out pretty well. Does anybody have any experience, or suggestions? Thanks.

Fuel filter maybe.

I actually didn't have a fuel filter on the line when it started doing it. However I have just put one on.

The fact that it runs when "sprayed" would suggest it is fuel starvation. Sounds like it may be the usual dirty carb/clogged main jets. If that is the case, it needs a good carb disassembly and cleaning. Be careful with carb spray because there is no lubricant in it so you are running without oil. How long has it been since it ran right? Does it sit for long periods of time? Do you use fuel stabilizer?

It sat for two months before I took out again. I don't use fuel stabilizer becuase i usually just always start out with new fresh gas. However, this time the gas did sit, then i used it. Now it bogs down. I've replaced the gas now, and put a fuel filter in line. I'll try tearing the carb down again and cleaning some more.

Cleaned the carbs still bogs down. It did gain a little, but still not there. Is there anything else to do to these carbs to try to clean them any better before I rebuild them?

Used two cans of carb cleaner, in every hole I could find. I'm going to soaking it overnight and see if I have any luck. Any other suggestions and I'll try them.

Soaked it, ran a wire through every hole, blew it out with compressed air. NOTHING. I can manually choke the bottom carb to get it to work and it will rev up, but when its left in idle you can cover up the top carb and it will kill the engine. Cover up the bottom carb and it only looses a little. I don't know what else to try.

did you disassemble the carb, remove all three jets and clean them. did you use rebuild kits? like this. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013

you can go here and see diagram of the carbs, you have low, mid and high speed jets, behind plugs. do mix them up.

They have both been rebuilt recently (5 months ago) when I had this problem before, and it worked after that. It was also the bottom carb then. I soaked it overnight, blew out all the holes, and both jets. It only has two jets and they both have fixed offices. Ran wires through them still nothing.

have you replaced your fuel hoses, the ethanol in the fuel today eats the inside of the fuel lines, and clogs the carbs, you need alcohol resistant fuel lines, and it sounds like the float needle or the jets are clogged in the bottom carb. you can clean a carb today, and curd can get into them, tomorrow. Brp site is not loading at present. but the crowley diagram show 3 fixed jets.

Sorry, that was my mistake. There are 3 orifices, I need to double check my post. I just replaced the fuel lines on advice from my boss. They were flaking, and they were hard so I just replaced those about a week ago.

going back an reading all the above post. it looks like the we think, you have a fuel restriction on the lower carb. what i don't know as i am not there.

Recheck your float adjustment and make sure the needle is connected to the float with the clip and it moves freely in the seat. You should also make sure the "T" fitting on the fuel line going to te bottom carb is clear.

I just replaced the fuel lines and all the fittings two weeks ago. I'll go back and check the float adjustment again. I was also wondering if a vaccum leak could cause fuel flow problems? For ten bucks a rebuild kit, I think I'm just going to do them both again.

Both cylinders are right in the 100's. I was worried that may be the problem in the beginning, so I checked it about a month ago.
