I have a new alternator that I bought here for my 1984 Merc 140.
Thanks to many other threads on this board, I think I pretty much understand what's going on. The diagram in this post was particularly helpful and it matches my new alternator perfectly.
I'm still just a bit unsure of how to connect my old wires to this new alternator. Attached is a picture that I took of how my old alternator was connected with 4 wires leading to two posts. There were also a couple of other connections under the cap as shown in the picture.

My guess is that the
- Orange and Red wires in the left of my picture --> "B Battery + Output"
- Black wires in the right of my picture --> "E Ground B-"
Is that right?
and even if it is, what do I do with the red and purple wires that came with the alternator labeled EXC and S?
thanks so much for any help in advance, I just don't want to fry anything
