Noob here. I have a new boat that I just hooked the muffs to and turned on the water and started the engine. I thought if the impeller/pickup was working that water would come from the indicated hole. If this is wrong, let me know.

If the impeller/pickup seems bad, what are the chances of putting the boat in the water and having it work?

I know how to replace the impeller, it's just been about 18 years. If I have to crack the foot open, I will also replace the speedo tube as it is cut in half and does not work.

Thanks for all replies.

I realize where I pointed "exhaust" isn't exhaust, what is it. The exhaust is prop center.

it could just be dirty, i would take off the hose from outside of the power head right before the pee hole and start the motor, if it was dirty, water should come out, then you will know if its working, otherwise i dont know.

I,ve posted so much today I have to clear my prefetch and my cookies go to iternet options probably doa defra g and a disc check lol when was the last service done on this engine if over a year replace wterpum and lower LU oil. also might be a good idea to do the fuel pump before you get stuck out here in the great blue yonder Maintanance can save alot of $ when it comes to just repair. in short if the pisser isn,t pissing it,s not drinking repair

First. You need to pull the lowerend off and inspect.
change the impellar and possby the pump housing.
without checking all that out. your are just guessing and so would everyone else.
Nice motor just to be guessing. If I had that motor I would buy an OEM MERC MANUAL. You will need it down the road.

Here are your pictures corrected. The Exhaust relief ports are used at an idle when the engine isn't pushing enough exhaust out to push out the prop. The Tell Tail stream should be a steady stream and never get too hot that you can't hold your hand in it indefinately.

Hope this helps. Craig

that is the tell tail correct seeing the engine hasn,t been serviced it,s time anyway redo the waterpump and have peice of mind if theres a clog up top deal with it at that point this makes the most sense to me. i would not run the engine in the water until you have a steady flow out the tell tail or risk losing that nice engine
