84 merc in a stator of confusion

I own an 84 merc - 50 hp, 4-cylinder, electric start. My merc mechanic says I need a new stator. However, I've seen prices (OEM / Aftermarket) fluctuate all over the place for this part. Mercury describes the part as a Stator Kit and sells it for about $350 plus. Other Aftermarket companies (Sierra) have the part for as low as $140.00. Am I missing something. Is there a difference between a Stator Kit and simply a Stator? Any good advice would help me make a good decision. Thanks.

I've replaced quite a few stators and have never had any problems with the "CDI/Rapair" brand.

You can compare prices at iBoats, but I don't usually find a better price than here: http://www.boatfix.com/searchcdi.asp

Looks like $107.11 for your stator, a bargain!

Mercurys stater kit is a kit that contains a stator, rectifier and switch box it's there way of fixing their defective ign. system and letting you pay for it. The best aftermarket stator is from CDI electronics It has a 2 year warren tty like most of there products there quality is light years ahead of Mercurys or anyone elses that I know we have replaced dozens of merc's defective stators without a single failure
