While adjusting the timing on my boat, I touched the wrench to a bolt on the wiring harness attached to the manifold causing a major spark. When I checked everything on the boat worked except the tilt up motor. Does anyone know where a breaker or fuse might be that I could have blown. The fuse to the actual switch is good.

Thanks

Re: 84 omc 5.0 sterndrive- looking for fuse for tilt up motor

Hi.

I have an '85 2.5L and blew a tilt fuse in a similar manner. I found the fuse on the above the starter motor - there are two 50-amp fuses there in pull-apart plugs that are maroon in color. The fuses have wire "ties" to keep the plugs from pulling apart. One is for the tilt, the second fuse is for the starter circuit.

FYI, I found it difficult to find a replacement glass-bodid 50A fuse, so I bought a fusible link 50A at an auto store and wired it in. Works great.

excellent..... I saw the pull apart plugs like you describe, but I thought they were just connections. I will open them when I get home.... Thank you very much for the info and I will post the results....

I just replaced one of my 50A fuses on my '91 OMC 5.0L last year(fuse was corroded inside)..luckily the marina I go to had some in stock but I guess they are getting harder to get (??) So from advice from this board, I bought the last 4 50A fuses the guy had in stock just to have on the boat with me..just is case. May want to buy a few wherever you find them. Just a thought.

Thank you kponhlo. I found and checked the fuse. It's in the maroon pull apart plugs just like you described. On the 5.0 it's right on top of the engine on a bracket thats attached to the intake manifold. There was even a faded piece of paper with the part # attached to it.

The 50 amp fuse has an OMC part # of 982019. By punching that into the internet I found several places that sell them. They are less than $2.00. This will be the cheapest repair I've ever done on the boat.

Thanks again
