'84 Rude 140 Water Pump parts issue

I'm rebuilding the water pump etc. before putting an '84 Rude 140 on my current project boat. I bought a Mallory rebuild kit and found that the stainless impeller housing is a slightly larger diameter than what was in there and there's no way it's going into the housing. I just checked the part number and supposedly it's the correct kit. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be going on?

Maybe it's packaged incorrectly: Contact the company you purchased it from and discuss the problem with them.

I guess I was wondering if there's something more sinister at work (per my late-night conspiracy theories) such as an OMC mid year parts change or if this particular parts manufacturer had a history of problems.

The water pump stainless cup was the same part number the whole model year. That cup made it's debut mid-year in 1982 and continued through the 84 model year. If you have a replacement lower unit (different year lower unit) that might explain things.
