1984 Rude 4 hp twin. Had it out in a rowboat, and today in the tank. Bought this with a Jonboat, sold it, and want to sell the motor to my neighbor. Went through it, and out on the water, around 1/2 throttle, a real racket starts up, intense clacking, and goes away if I move the throttle up or down just a touch. Back in the tank, it seems like intake racket. Only at a certain speed. Went over the ignition, and all is fine, and in sync. Great compression (120 both), and I'm wondering if the reeds are making this noise. Also it has only a plastic square piece mounted to the carb, with the throat open and in plain view with the lower cover off. Seems like there should some sort of silencer there, bit cannot find it in any diagrams here, BRP, Ishop. Any suggestions here.

Check for a loose/wobbly stator, SCAATY.

Thats an idea...just to happen a a certain RPM, and giving it rev's in the tank it shows up at odd places also. Seems more like some sort of a vibration/frequency event. I'll pop the top and dumb down and go over it again. Thanks, JB
