Resealed the lower unit last summer but still getting water in gear oil. Put new seals in Swivil housing too. Question on the swivil housing seals are they supposed to keep water from getting down to the main vert drive shaft bearing housing.

Tks

No, lake water is actually supplied to the pump between the vertical driveshaft and the swivel housing. The vertical driveshaft is in the lake... no attempt is made to keep water out of that space. The only reason there is a gasket is to keep the impeller from sucking exhaust.

Seals in the swivel housing are to hold grease in the swivel bearing.

I'm trying to think if the gasket covers anything that could let water into the gearcase.... don't think so.

There are seals in the bearing housing that sits inside the swivel housing.

The lip seal around the broken shaft in this pic is what keeps oil and water apart at the vertical shaft top of lower unit. Gasket on the shift converter also seals as well as the cable.

Ok tks for that info and the great picture too, I kind of that that but wasnt sure, the top of the swivil housing is pitted up a bit where the big teflon washer sits and thought that may be getting water down to the lower unit. I am going to pressure test tmrw to see where the leak is. I have a feeling its around the mech shift housing.
Tks again for your experience.

Ok guys, attempted a 8 psi pressure test on lower unit, didnt emerse in water yet just a dry test looking for soapy bubbles around suspect areas, didnt see anything, but prob is air leaking out the converter end of my shift cable. tried a plastic bag over it and tightly taped it with tape but still leaking air, poor bags i guess , any better solutions to sealing the shift cable and more info on the testing procedure? ps upper unit been removed from lower.

Pressure test per factory manual procedure (using heater hose and clamps to seal the top of the shift cable)

this is where the manual comes in.
You use a length of hose, 2 clamps and a bolt or piece of dowel
pics in the manuals - even Seloc.

kinda neat that they vented their lower through the cable. Only outdrive with a vented lower unit.... prevents the pressure/vacuum cycles that other drives have to seal against.

Yes that was pretty clever, I was surprised to hear the air comming out the cable end, who would have thought haha, before im done with this 800 I will have covered many issues with omc outdrives, now when i get a chance back at it to find the leak. Will post results.

Got a pressure test ongoing, lower unit has been holding 10 psi for 3 hours, so how was the water getting in after reseal last fall, even on the muffs? Will it be woth the effort to rig up for a vacuum test?
