Gentlemen,
I am so heartbroken right now. First posted/joined this forum last summer. Learned enough to rip apart fuel system, got new pump through forum. Engine never stopped cutting out on me though. Used to just quit at high speeds. Bought carb kits, was moving at the time (March) brought it to a reputable mechanicic to work on, and make it run. Carbs done, replaced head & gaskets, few other things. Been back in the shop 4 times since then. And I did tell him, someone on this forum had mentioned "stator". No, "sounds like fuel", another pump, new hoses and bulbs, and fittings, 3rd or 4th time around with the fuel system. And $1400 bucks at this point. Went down after work today, he tells me he broke down on it out there today. He's finally listening. They've been trying to blame me! "The plugs are fouled", ect. Well, with a top end speed now of 1300 rpms, guess that will happen. So today, I'm on vacation now, he shrugs his shoulders and says I need $500 worth of parts for the next trial and error........ So, done venting, anyone know where I can find a USED STATOR & TIMER BASE KIT?? I need a "Power Pack" too he says but not sure if used is good idea on that?

Thank You in advance guys,
Vacationing at 1300 rpms :-(

Hey Hooty,

Thanks!

I'll be trying those places when they open up this morning. Could have bought me a good used outboard for this much $$$$$$$$$$$. I just hope this will be a fix this time..........

This a serious reply!!!!
Been in shop 5 times and $1400 and still has same problem??? And wants $500 more?? Why would you believe anything this "reputable mechanic" tells you? Take it down to the disreputable mechanic's shop. At least you will expect to be $crewed and won't be disappointed. And who knows, he may actually fix it.

Re: 85 120hp Evinrude Stator (yr old problem JR & gang)

Maybe I should back up a bit here guys. The first trip in, I didn't mind paying for carb rebuilds, head, head gaskets, ect. I always thought "fuel" problem myself. Motor used to just cut out at high speeds, but over the last few months problem has gotten worse and worse. Picked it up thursday, for the long weekend, wouldn't even start! And got no help! So put trolling motor on, and with a few tows, saw fireworks, ect. Now back to partsville. Stator, timer base and powerpack. Seem to have no spark on #1 now and mechanic says bad stator could be doing that. So my question is, how bad a gamble is buying used stator for half price? And, should stator come before powerpack? Just read another post regarding these. Thanks, need Evinrude running.............

You can check the stator and timer with a meter, if the stator and timer is good, then the pack output can be tested. A used stator at half price should come with a 30/90 day warranty for the part.

Re: 85 120hp Evinrude Stator (yr old problem JR & gang)

Thanks Clanton,

Due to my limited budget, think I'm going to order the used stator first. Other parts will have to wait. One test per week/paycheck. Mechanic claims test can only be performed with motor running, and under load. That's why I brought it there, for the "test tank". Don't think my motor ever made it in there though. I have all 3 manuals, and a meter. But only know how to use meter for voltage checks. Any simple instructions for meter use out there?

Re: 85 120hp Evinrude Stator (yr old problem JR & gang)

The first tests should be done on cold engine, sparkplugs in, and hot battery to insure engine turns enough rpms to make a spark. Spark should be a very blue and jump at least 7/16 with a nice snap. No spark, disconnect large red connector at engine harness and try again, no spark, check stator charge coil. Check charge coil by disconnecting the 2 brown wires from charge coil, check ohms between 2 brown wires, 560 ohms. Then check brown wires for short to ground, one meter lead to one brown wire, one lead to ground, spin engine with starter, any needle movement indicates grounded wire or charg coil windings, check both wires. All of this check ok, check charge coil output, meter connected between the two brown wires, AC scale, spin engine, should be
results X 1.414 = over 175 volts. Check the timer by connecting one lead to timer termial lead E and check the other 4 wires one at a time, specs are .03 volts. This should not be Trial and Error. I just read your post that said you had a meter and a manual, all you need now is a shade, time, and follow the steps in the manual. After the cold test, you still have a problem, use JBs trick and warm the electrial parts with a hair dryer and recheck, specs should remain close to cold specs. You still have a problem, put the boat in the water, use long leads to meter, check pack output to each cylinder, this will ID which cylinder is the problem.

Re: 85 120hp Evinrude Stator (yr old problem JR & gang)

OK, got my thinking cap on now. Went to order "used" stator. Guy said since I'm troubleshooting, "used" is not a good idea. Then I explained the symptoms, high speed cutout, graduating down to low speed cutout, to nothing now, won't start even. He also said I shouldn't be using a mechanic that didn't run these tests. So after some discussion, I wanted to order something  , got a new power pack coming, for $120, may be worth replacing. But I'd still like to do these tests. Bought a spark tester a while back, will pick up starter button thing after work. ASKING how to hook that up now. Don't want to hook up to wrong terminals on solenoid(?). For push button thingy I hook....

Thanks guys, gotta try and finish this job myself. Will do a "search" at lunch for more info... :(

Hook one wire of the starter button too the small post on the starter solenoid, the one with the red and yellow wire. Connect the other starter button wire too the big terminal on the starter solenoid, the one with the cable from the battery. Push the button and spin the engine.

c/6

Hooty

Re: 85 120hp Evinrude Stator (yr old problem JR & gang)

Thanks Hooty,

Know I read somewhere about hooking them up wrong, or maybe that was battery terminals. Either way, thanks, better safe than sorry.

And speaking of sorry, I hope the powerpack makes a difference. Just need parts available in case....

It ain't the trial and error, or the money, it's being landlocked.........

I wanna be out there on the water!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 85 120hp Evinrude Stator (yr old problem JR & gang)

Should start new post. Done whining about "mechanic". On my own now, with you guys to help. Used spark tester for first time tonight, 4 good sparks. Used remote starter, another first for my outboard learning. Checked the 2 brown wires, coming out from under flywheel. With meter on 3000 ohms, pin to pin I get a reading of "001", with it on 300 I get 00.6
Using a Radio Shack digital meter. Know I'm looking for 560, are either of those readings percentages or something? Did I find a problem? Manual says make up leads with pins and contacts for checking, have power pack off, making up test leads to fit tomorrow. Gonna go read manual some more now. New power pack is coming. Above test may point to stator though? Well, be checkin in again tomorrow guys. Oh, and once the flywheels off, any tricks to stator or timer base removal? Thanks again guys.

When you install the stator screws use loctite red on screw threads. Flywheel is installed with a clean and dry taper on crank and flywheel. Use the Permtex in can with brush to coat threads in flywheel nut, torque nut to specs.

be very carefull not to get thread sealer on flywheel taper.
makes real hard to get off next time.
when i took off mine i found the red locker on taper, ruined a puller trying to get that thing off.
