I just purchased a 86 Winner 18' bass boat. It has a 150 black max XR2 on the back with hot foot (also has 10" jack thing?). It has a quick silver? prop with exhaust ports in it. We test drove the boat when I purchased the boat we (owner and my self) took it out.Ideled out about 2 minutes then, We ran out pretty fast (speed o is broke, no big loss from what I read), but rpm's were some where about 4000 -4500 from what I could tell. drove down a very flat river for 3-4 minutes turned around and back. Loaded it up on the trailer.
Couple days later I took it out myself to learn the boat. Stopped filled it up with mid grade gas a marine staybil. Unsure gas and whats in the tanks.I started it up and it seemed to be cold natured for a couple minutes (forgot to prime it, maybe the reason?). didnt want to idel less than 1000 RPM's, then as it warmed up it was fine. I had to go thru a no wake zone for like 7-10 minutes. Finially I was able to get some speed and I got on it. It seemed to flutter and not take off, finially it did(maybe 15 seconds) and went to plane pretty easy. as I drove it down the lake I noticed that the temp was 220 and climbing, so I backed off very fast. I was running about 4500 rpm's for 5 mins or so. As I slowed so did the temp. I heard no warnings or buzzers. I got back on it and as it woulld get to 4500+/- rpm's the temp would increase. So I played on the lake learning how to trim it out and stuff for 2-2.5 hours. different RPM's testing the how fast I could get it and watching the temp. I stopped at one point to download GPS on phone to see how fast I was getting to. I topped out around 55 or so. I figured things seemed to be fine other than the temp deal. I headed back to dock and as I got close it didnt want to get below 2k. I tapped the throttle and now it was at 3k, so I killed the motor, pulled back on hot foot, and refired it. Still at 3k, I used the troller to get me to the dock and tie off. I pumped the throttle and tried again, also pulled back on hot foot. Still 3k. so I loaded it up brought it home. put muffs on it and fired it up still 3k. SO I pulled the cover off and found gas dripping off bottom carb. I figured float was stuck. I pulled the card and the float moved freely. As I really inspected the motor I saw water lines around edge of the head.
I pulled the head and found water in bottom cylinder. After thinking aobut it I recall seeing the water lines before but as a first time boat owner I never paid attention to it. any way I also notices the head gasket had a rip in it. SO I installed the gasket with rip (near bolt towards outter side) on the top and re installed and torqed the head. tried to fire again, rpm was slightly lower, and leak seemed to just be at the top near that rip.
Messing around with the boat I fired it up again later and found it I push in the choke on the (or pump it) the rpms will drop. could the choke be stuck?
SO Im going after 2 new head gaskets tomorrow. I was told the carbs were new. they look new (very clean), is the choke elctrionic?
SOrry for my first post being so long, But in a newbie boat owner, really frustrated. I can install superchargers, clutch, lift kits, drop kits, you name it on a car Im good, but this outboard I know NOTHING. looking for advise.
