ok I have been doing alot on this boat. The boat idles great and runs in neutral great. once there is a load on the engine it bogs real bad. I just changed the rotor, points and condenser in my prestolite distributor. Took it out this evening and it did the same thing. after running it for about an hour I could only idle back in to shore.

Does anyone know what the gap should be on the points? I have checked the fuel and all the filters, there is no debris or water in them.

If its not marked on the engine cover, usually .016-.019 is about right. There may be a link to a service manual in the Adults Only section up top.

It sounds kind of like fuel problems to me. Have you changed the fuel filter? Normally ignition issues aren't heavily load dependant like that. They tend to be constant, or rpm dependant, or sometimes just completely random. Not enough fuel will be very much load dependant though.

I actually might have found the problem. I think there might be a problem with my shift mechanism. I have seen this and wondered what was going on. Take a look at this link. I think my esa switches are not set properly. i can get up to plane if I move the throttle very slow but I would never be able to pull a skier out of the water.

Re: 85' 5.7 omc points?

Thanks for the tip. I have never made it to the "adults only" section before.

For anyone else who needs the answer to this problem, tune up specs are as follows:
5.7 gm 350- plug gap = .035, point gap = .018, dwell = 28-32, degrees timing = 10 deg BTDC, fuel pressure = 5 3/4 - 7 PSI, Idle RPM 500-600, WOT RPM 4200-4600.

I hope this helps someone in the future.
