my 86 50, runs and starts ok. last time i went out it ran great. took it out sunday, and i had a soft ball, and no upper rpm power.
started ok, idles and trolls fine, but when i go to wot, or 75% it seems to lack power. it would not get onto plane. i did attach a bow mounted trolling motor, but i dont think it weighs enough to slow down the boat? its a bayliner 14 footer.

compression is fine, 130 pounds in both cylinders, and good spark. new gas, tried both tanks (i brought out two 6 gallon tanks)
the only thing different is the ball would not get hard. i changed the ball (so its new) before i went out. i also placed the tank ball closer to the motor, it was near the tank before.

Depending on the tank there is a stem that is inside the tank that dips into the gas that you are siphoining out with ball. If that stems comes off you will never get suction. If there is a leak of gas coming out of motor and running down the leg, and you keep squeezing the ball and nothing happens but you can smell gas inside your house a 100 ft. away? Then thats something else.

If the ball doesn't get firm after squeezing 5 or 6 times, it may be an indication that the needle valve(s) in one or more of the carbs is not seating properly. When all of the needle valves close, it prevents any more fuel from pumping into the fuel bowl. That's when the primer bulb should feel firm.

While you are checking the fuel pump diaphram, gentley push on the check valve poppets and see if they are sticking. Sticking check vavles in the pump give the kind of indications that you are getting.
