I have a 1985 Mariner 55HP motor that is not starting properly. This is one of the Mariner motors that was made by Yamaha. The motor starts fine most times but ocassionally will not start after it has been sitting a while. An example would be, like after being anchored at a hot fishing spot for an hour or so. It will grind down like the problem is a dead battery. Changing the battery to a fresh one doesn't help. The old battery will test good. To get it going, I have to rope start it. If I shut it off it will usually restart. Some times it will go 10-15 times and work fine and then it may not start 3 or 4 times in a row. I would like to check out the entire charging/starting sytem. I have seen some replies to other topics describing how to do this. Anything special that needs to be done for this motor. I have been unsuccesful in locating a shop manual for this motor. T  he C-55 Yamaha seems to be pretty much the same. HELP !!

Oak John, if you check at the bottom of this page and click on repair manuals, you will find a Clymer Part# B714 that covers 1976 to 1987, 2 to 200 HP engines for Mariner.

Thanks for the tip on the manual. I have actually seen this one before. It does not specifically cover my motor. (It is really a Yamaha motor) Anyway, I have found a yamaha manual at the local library that pretty much covers everything.
