I am considering moving up to a 85-89 30ft Sea Ray Weekender. I really like the layout, and my reservations about inboards have been resolved. They seem like a good solid boat.

I was talking to a person the other day who I consider fairly knowledgable about boats. He told me to stay away from larger Sea Rays of this vintage as they had structural issues. He said they used balsa wood between the layers of fiberglass in the hull, and that any stress cracks would cause the wood to soak up water like a sponge. He also said very few of these boats would pass a moisture meter test from a survey.

Is he right or wrong?

Rick...There have been issues w/ the larger searays soaking up water..Many of the issues that I have read about concerned boats in the mid to late 1990's and than 35 ft....Power Boat Reports, a consumer magazine, has been most active in exposing this issue and turning the heat up on Searay...Safest bet is to bring a moisture meter w/ you look at the boats....
