We just were given an older ski boat that happens to have this motor on it. It had been sitting in my brother in laws garage for the past 3 years. Key note: He did not prep it for storage.

We brought her home, put in a new battery, new gas, new plugs and turned her over (after priming both the gas and oil bulbs). He had told us the last time he got her running he had to kick start her with a squirt of starter fluid into the carbs. We did the same and she fired up but would not keep running. With the choke on about half way the longest we got her running was about 10 seconds.

I cleaned out the fuel filter (was dirty) and also verified that oil was getting to the VRO. I have not tested to see if the fuel pump is working (via a test I found in this newsgroup) but wanted to post this message to see if anyone else has any ideas.

Thanks ahead of time.

also DO NOT USE STARTER FLUID , sorry for yelling but its bad.

your ob needs oil in the fuel this is where it gets its lubrication....... if you must prime it use some pre-mix (50:1) in a spray bottle, although i bet after you get done witht he carbs i bet you no longer have any more issues with idle or starting.

before you spend a $ on this, check the compression. to be sure you have a viable patient. sitting 3 years, no prep. it is going to need an impeller, carbs cleaned and rebuild, i would disable the oil side of the vro pump and premix fuel at 50:1, as that vintage is known for failure.

here's some good reading. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680

VRO conversion w/ pump still working

if the fuel side on your Pump is still working it is very simple. unplug the 2 line harness going to the oil tank, unplug the 3 or 4 wire harness, going to the Vro pump. cut and cap the oil line going into the motor. add oil to fuel tank, mix well, then remove fuel line at top carb, catching gas in a container, pump the fuel line bulb until you get premixed gas to the carb. you can tell as it will change color. put line back on carb, and go boating.

Re: 85 90hp Evinrude starting problems

I spent about 3 hours on the engine today. The Fuel primer is functioning and the gas that comes out of the VRO has a tint to it (so I am assuming it is mixing oil) We also verified the gaps on the plugs were .030 (they were .040)

With this I was able to keep the engine running but had to use the fuel primer to keep her going. I am guessing that the floats are stuck up and the carbs gunked out.

Does anyone know the proper carb kit for this and also, do you feel I should also replace the floats?

Thanks again for all your help
