 I recently replaced my Rectifier / Regulator. The original one had a Red, Yellow/Gray, Yellow, Grey, and a Purple wire. After I had installed the new regulator and mounted the flywheel back on the motor. I was hooking up the wires to the harness. I noticed that the new regulator was lacking the purple wire. When I bought it from an authorized OMC dealer the guy said that my Rectifier/regulator had been replaced by a new one. The original part number is 583268. The new part no. is 395204. Everything seems to be working properly, but I am still concerned about the lack of the purple wire. The battery is charging and the tack. is working. I looked at the wiring diagram in the shop manual and noticed that the purple wire is connected to the alarm horn or buzzer. I guess what I am asking is does any know what the purple wire is for, and is it ok that the new regulator doesn’t have it?
Thanks

Just like Tide, new and inproved. The purple is a switched hot lead from engine control switch. Not needed on new regulator.

John, for what its worth, it sounds like you have the water cooled rectifier/ regulator on a John/rude. Those damn things are expensive and unstable. I have the same setup.

In the future you might want to change to a straight rectifier and save 80% on cost.
-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=- :) -=-==-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Bradster941
First Mate
Member # 19948

posted May 05, 2003 03:33 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
H2O Rectifier Regulator
1987 OMC 115 with water cooled rectifier / regulator combo does have a/c input, no d/c output.
Is there any reason I can’t go to the side mount air cooled rectifier and can I do away with the regulator as mentioned in other post? Stator is 10 amps and still good.

Thanks, Bradster…

--------------------
If your too busy to go fishing,
Your just too busy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posts: 14 | From: Florida | Registered: Mar 2003 | IP: Logged

Joe Reeves
OMC Guru
Member # 6826

posted May 05, 2003 03:40 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brad..... With a small 10amp alternator and no doubt P/T/T, it's very unlikely that you'll ever need to worry about an overcharged battery. Install a voltage gauge to ease your mind. If the voltage ever starts to climb over 14.5 volts, turn on some electrical equipment. Cut and get rid of the wires associated with the water cooled job to eliminate any possible problems.

--------------------
Joe (30+ Years With OMC)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posts: 873 | From: Central West Florida | Registered: Feb 2002 | IP: Logged

Bradster941
First Mate
Member # 19948

posted May 05, 2003 04:47 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thought as much Joe, and thanks.
I’m not to proud to ask 4 a second opinion.

Thanks again. Brad
:D Thanks, I did read your post, but I had already spent the $200. You are right it is the water cooled unit. I will switch to the three wire setup if I experience the problem again. Did you switch? If you did how is it working?

Re: 85 Evinrude 115hp, Rectifier / Regulator Question “No Purple Wire”

We have found that some of those blocks seem to trap air at the top of the block. We drill into the water jacket right above #1 cylinder and install a "T" fitting. We then cut the overboard line and attach to each side of the "T". Any air trapped up high in the block then has somewhere to go.

Good luck!

Re: 85 Evinrude 115hp, Rectifier / Regulator Question “No Purple Wire”

What Dhadley is saying is that a air bubble forms on top of the water chamber isolating the reg/ rectifier from the water circuit and causing it to over heat, ( no cooling ). Thus the failure of the reg/rectifier.

At least I think thats what Dhadley is saying.
If so, good catch on his part and thanks for the info. Dhadley.

I will be changing mine out this weekend.
Needless to say the old one will stay in place as a water plug. :) :)
