I have 1988 Force, 85 HP. Here is what is happening:
I am noticing that it needs longer cranking time to start. It seems that every time i go on the water it needs more and more cranking to start. Yesterday morning it took almost 10 minutes before it finally started. Once it starts the first time in the morning, it starts beautifully the whole day.
I am also noticing that it idles little rougher and it sounds kind'a noisier than it used to.
I guess what I am asking is if there is something I could do myself before I take it to the mechanic

Thanks.

Re: 85 force acting up

The plugs, maybe a decarb, and what is your starting procedure? They can be very fussy about how you start them.

My procedure:

Prime bulb, crank engine with choke on until it fires, but doesn't start. Crank with no choke and she starts right up.

I know a lot of folks need to start with the throttle in the fast idle position, so that may help as well.

Re: 85 force acting up

Seems common with these motors. I have the same exact issue after it sits for more than a week. If I run it every day, it starts up no problem, but if it sits for more than 1 week, it will take a while to start (about 10 mins of cranking) and once I get it going, the rest of the day it starts right up, no problems. I use the proper cold start procedure. I've changed plugs, rebuilt carbs, bulb, fuel lines, cleaned fuel recirculation, timing, battery, fuel pump, water pump, etc. Would be nice for to start up quicker. Seems like all the fuel drains out after sitting for a while and it takes a while for the fuel to circulate through? THis is just a wild guess tho and not sure how or what to do about fixing this. Maybe some of the pros could chime in on some other things we could try?

As for the idling rough and noisier issue, I would do the regular maintenance (tune-up) on it if you haven't, check compression to make sure the noise is not a knock resulting from a bad cylinder, etc.
