I?ve had an 85 Ebko open bow with a 85 hp Force outboard since last October. I?ve had it out on the lake a few times and fixed a few issues with the engine. I used JB Weld on a carburetor crack which made a positive difference to the way the engine runs. Checked and cleaned the plugs too. I finally got a barrel to put the lower end into so I can run it on my driveway which I did this morning. There is a problem I would like some advice with. To start with, I have not yet done a ?link and sinc? process nor have I run carburetor cleaning through the carbs yet.
First, it is difficult to start; 8-10 attempts. Several times the starter will disengage and just spin. When it does start I need to have it set to fast idle or it will die right away. After it is warmed up, about 5 minutes, the engine RPM can vary by a couple of hundred (even at wide open fast idle). For example; at fast idle it will be purring along at about 2000rpm then, without any input from me, it will drop to 1700 or so. At normal idle it will run at around 700rpm and drop to 500rpm and sometimes stall. It almost sounds as if it?s missing, but not a real strong missing sound, and intermittent at that. When I?ve had it out on the lake at WOT, it will purr along around 5200rpm with no missing symptoms. Like I said, today is the first time I?ve been able to run it at home and I haven?t done anything other than the carb crack repair so far. Does this sound electrical, maybe coil packs, or more of a fuel flow issue? I?m a pretty good 4-stroke mechanic but am certainly on the learning curve with the two-stroke set up. I did buy the Clymer manual and am pouring over that at the moment. Thanks for any advice.
