I just bought a reman. pump assembly and put it on the boat and was excited to see the motor go up and down! but it didn't it just made noise. the guy i got it from said it might be the rams, he said to disconnect the line from the bottom of the ram and cap it off. with the ram in the up position it should creep down. if it creeps down the its the ram, if it stays up then the reman pump is bad. any other ideas?

If noise from motor is kind of clunky/grindy then armature may not be seated into valve body gears. If pump gets dropped during shipping hard enough and at just the right (or wrong, LOL) angle then armature can pop out of gear. If motor and valve body separated then it is very common for armature not to line up with gear slot.

But ... lifting motor and blocking off tilt ram is a conclusive test. It completely isolates tilt ram from all other pieces. If you plug up bottom of tilt ram then engine should not budge. If it does, then something wrong with ram. If it does hold solid then you can assume tiltram=okay and focus on the trim cylinder and pump.
